As expected with entering any company environment, I did not know what to expect or what tasks I will be set, therefore I was understandably nervous. However, upon arrival, the Aboveline team greeted me with warm smiles and immediately eased my nerves.
My supervisor Izzy Ford has been an amazing guide for me during my time here, always ensuring that I am comfortable and able to complete my tasks in my own pace and timing, letting me learn how important it is to work independently and manage my time.
We kicked the week off with a tour of the company led by Izzy that allowed me to view all aspects of the process to making exhibition stands, and it fascinated me how each department operated. In my time here, I have learnt how vast and varied each part of the company is, from design, to marketing, to manufacture, to installation and every small task that comes in between.
I then was tasked with researching the background and history of Aboveline. This was done through a brief introduction with Izzy about the task and their core values and guidelines to get me started. An area was then given to me with the appropriate resources to complete this, and I found it to be comfortable and relaxed. A pack for my work experience was given which allowed me to see all the tasks for the week, including a marketing audit in which helped me to fully analyse the company from a marketing perspective but also permitted me to give suggestions for the company.
The department I had my placement in was the marketing department, where we focused mainly on the promotion of both the clients and our company. This was through a variety of ways, including social media posts and campaign ideas. Throughout all of this, the staff made sure that I was receiving the appropriate and suited experience that will move me forward in my career and give insight to a new work environment. Additionally, they gave me many opportunities to observe what it is like to work and manage clients and the background research that is required prior to the building of exhibition stands themselves.
One activity that I particularly enjoyed was assisting the making of several videos and posts to upload to social media. This including gathering staff and filming each part, before editing and finalising the video. I felt like I had improved on my video editing skills and was taught many new ones in terms of software, using new tools such as Canva and the TikTok editing feature. This is the experience that I would like to continue as a hobby to develop my knowledge in this field, and perhaps use marketing in the future in whatever field I go into.
My area of interest currently is in Product Design, and therefore they ensured that my tasks were tailored towards that department even though my initial placement was for marketing. For example, I had the opportunity of being in a meeting where the designers of the company were discussing their design specification and brief for a client that required interior design work. This shows Aboveline’s flexibility with tasks, and that they do not solely create bespoke exhibition stands.
Reflecting on the week, I have loved every part of this experience, from meeting the team to carrying out the different tasks given to me, but also taking away meaningful skills which are both new to me or skills enhanced from previously. Thank you Aboveline for everything!
